Among the general characteristics of the Spanish people, their language may not be improperly numbered. For, though the Limousin or Provençal, the old language of the troubadour, is the popular tongue of Catalonia and Valencia, whilst in Biscay , Alava, and Guipuscoa they have the Basque, a harsh and peculiar dialect, which has existed since the earliest times, even before the coming of the Romans, yet the Castilian is now so widely diffused over the Peninsula, that it has received the general appellation of the Spanish language. Un militar americà que voltava per ací va notar, l'any 1829, la curiositat que eixe llemosí o provençal (dis-li com vullgues) «is the popular tongue of Catalonia and Valencia» (és la llengua general de Catalunya i València)... I se'n fa encara de demagògia amb el tema, però no amb la finalitat que el valencià-català deixe de ser la mateixa llengua compartida amb Catalunya, sinó que deixe de ser «popular», és a dir, general, del tots, del poble. I no cal dir que la força de l'estat espanyol i dels polítics convidats de pedra va fent efecte. De totes formes, si Mackenzie tornara al cap de dos segles, segur que apreciaria que els valencians ja no som més baixets que els catalans (és la primera impressió que té al passar cap a Vinaròs), però que els «trobos» de Càlig continuen vius en el mateix llemosí.
